What is a Casino?

A casino is a place where gambling takes place. It is usually combined with hotels, restaurants and other tourist attractions. In some cases it is also a venue for sports events and shows.

Something about gambling seems to encourage people to cheat, steal or otherwise attempt to circumvent the rules in order to make a big win. That’s why casinos spend a lot of time, effort and money on security. Modern casinos have a physical security force and a specialized surveillance department. The former patrols the property, while the latter operates the closed circuit television system that keeps an eye on everything that happens in and around the casino.

Most casino games are pure chance, although there is some skill involved in playing poker and other card games. Slot machines are by far the most popular casino game, and they account for a significant percentage of the money that is gambled away. The player inserts a coin or paper ticket, pulls a handle or pushes a button and then watches as varying bands of colored shapes roll on reels (actual physical ones or a video representation of them). If the right pattern comes up, the player wins a predetermined amount of money.

Some casinos give out free goods or services to players. This is known as comping. Some of the more common comps include free hotel rooms, meals, show tickets and even airline and limo service. Comps are awarded based on the amount of time and money spent at a particular casino.
