What You Should Know About Casinos

Unlike the seedy backrooms of the mob that once controlled gambling in America, many casinos today are sophisticated, high-end establishments that offer more than just games. Some feature restaurants, free drinks, stage shows and dramatic scenery. Some even serve as vacation destinations in their own right, like the elegant spa town of Baden-Baden, Germany.

Though gambling almost certainly predates written history, the casino as a place to find a variety of ways to gamble under one roof didn’t develop until the 16th century. During that time, a gambling craze swept Italy, and nobles would gather in private clubs known as ridotti to play cards and other games [Source: Schwartz]. These were the forerunners of modern casinos.

Most modern casinos offer a wide range of games, from blackjack and roulette to poker, craps and slot machines. Some even have specialty games, such as bingo and keno. These can be fun and relaxing, and they can add a new dimension to your casino experience.

Because large amounts of money are handled within a casino, both patrons and staff may be tempted to cheat or steal, either in collusion or independently. As such, casinos spend a great deal of time and money on security.
