The film is intense, and there are some disturbing scenes, including the torture of a man by a mobster (played by De Niro), the attempted murder of Sharon Stone’s character and the death of Joe Pesci’s Santoro in a cornfield. However, Scorsese did not use the violence purely for shock value or style; it was meant to show the reality of Las Vegas’ seedy underbelly.
