What is a Slot?

Slot

The word Slot is a noun that originated in the late 14th century to describe the hollow in the throat above the breastbone. The word derives from the Old French esclot, and is cognate with the Old Norse word slod. The word first appeared in English as a noun in the 1520s, but its current meaning is more ambiguous. It is also the name of a position in a game.

Computers use slots as part of their expansion capabilities, or “bays.” Unlike in older games, computer slots can have a variety of different symbols, and the odds of getting one of these symbols is nearly equal to the chance of getting any symbol. Today, computer-powered slots have over 20 symbols per reel. This makes them the most flexible type of casino equipment. Although you can’t expect to find loose slots in bars and airports, you can find them in more upscale casinos.

You can also use regular expressions to map values to slot types. For example, you can use a regular expression to map flight codes to a particular slot, such as “New York”. A similar method allows you to match phrases in utterances to certain slots. This feature helps make it easier to find information in the text. The more slots you have, the easier it will be to find what you need. The utterance mapping wizard will walk you through the process step-by-step.
