Poker is a card game played in a variety of variants throughout the world. The object of the game is to make the best possible hand from the combination of cards dealt.<\/p>\n
A standard 52-card deck is used in most games, sometimes with the addition of jokers. The game can be played with two packs, in which case the previous dealer shuffles one pack while the next deals the second.<\/p>\n
The first round of betting begins with the player to the left of the dealer, who is called a \u201cdealer\u201d or a \u201cplayer\u201d. Then in clockwise order players must call (match), raise, or fold.<\/p>\n
Some variants of the game involve a fixed amount of money to be placed into the pot before any betting may begin. In these games a player who matches the first bet must place double that amount in the pot, while a player who raises must place four times as much as the initial amount.<\/p>\n
After the last round of betting, which is referred to as the \u201cshowdown\u201d, players reveal their hands. The player with the best five-card hand wins the pot.<\/p>\n
The game of poker is played in private homes, at casinos, and in various forms of tournament play. The most popular variation is Texas Hold’em.<\/p>\n
